IT IS TIME TO DO MUCH MORE

The struggle for freedom of UFO information is not a confrontation;
it is a proposal for cooperation.

      There have been times of great outrage and upheaval amongst the UFO researchers when faced with the Brazilian military forces’ blatant denial of reality of the UFO phenomenon. One such moment of indignation was the so-called UFOs’ Official Evening, in May 1986, when dozens of unidentified flying objects were sighted and tracked on radar by different stations belonging to the Integrated Center of Air Defense and Air Traffic Control (Centro Integrado de Defesa Aérea e Controle de Tráfego Aéreo (Cindacta) and persecuted by fighter planes dispatched by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

      Every UFO investigator still remembers seeing former minister for the Aeronautics Octávio Moreira Lima come public on television and say, loud and clear, that within a month, FAB would disclose the result of its

investigations of the amazing phenomenon. Needless to say, we are still waiting... The revelation never came and when pressured to speak up, Moreira Lima merely minimized the importance of the event, trying to explain away, though not convincingly, the phenomenon which left the Brazilian militaries at a loss before the apparent “ultimate arrival of the aliens to our planet”. The same thing had happened a decade before, in 1977, when FAB was involved in a n unprecedented and intense way in one of the most amazing and tragic UFO flaps we’ve ever heard of, all over the world. It was the so-called “Chupa-chupa” phenomenon (“chupa” meaning “suck”), in Amazonia, which culminated in the so-called Operation Saucer (Plate), organized the 1st Regional Air Command (Comar), in Belém, Pará. The leader of the Operation was the brave captain Uyrangê Bolívar Soares Nogueira de Hollanda Lima, himself a witness of UFO manifestations, who had the courage to thoroughly register the events as they occurred. “We were constantly surprised by the sights of those objects, which were certainly being intelligently controlled and knew that we were there, studying them”, Hollanda declared to this author, when he was interviewed in 1997.

      These two incidents – definitely the most notorious cases in Brazilian Ufology – are but a few examples of how complex the UFO manifestation is in our country and of the gravity it represents. In both occasions, UFO researchers raised their voices, went public about it and pressured the government, accusing it either of omitting the facts or covering up the reality. And they showed their revolt at the silence – including this author. With the present campaign, UFO, Freedom of Information Now, we are after no fights or arguments; we are seriously and respectfully seeking open recognition and acknowledgment of the UFO issue, as well as the alien presence in our world.
